INSULATION TYPES

Wearing the appropriate type of insulation can mean the difference between a successful powder day and a drippy walk back to the car. Your insulator plays a very important role in all your outdoor activities. It will not only protect you from the cold but should also allow you to remain as dry as possible, allowing you to spend some extra quality time outside. With so many options on the market today, we can easily get lost trying to find what we need. Here are some tips on the different options available and their ideal use.

SYNTHETIC VS. DOWN

There are two categories of insulation available to you on the market: natural (down) and synthetic. Each has advantages and disadvantages. It is therefore up to you to choose an insulator that best suits your needs.

DOWN INSULATION

Down is known to be warm, very light and compressible. Its warmth to weight ratio is pretty much the best you can find on the market. It is an excellent choice for those that are looking for a lightweight garment that performs without compromising warmth. Ideal for low-intensity activities such as resort skiing, casual winter hiking or snowshoeing, down offers excellent weather protection, insulation, and core warmth. It is also best for use in dry conditions as it will tend to get wet in a humid environment and in case of excessive sweating. Down is hard to dry and as you all know humidity, moisture and water lead to ice.

SYNTHETIC INSULATION

If you are seeking for insulation that will perform better in high-intensity activities such as ski touring, backcountry skiing of trail running, look no further than synthetic insulation. Very breathable, this type of insulation reacts better in humid conditions and wicks away perspiration more easily and allows you to stay warm and dry. Synthetic insulation, on the other hand, tends to be a little heavier and often less compressible than natural down.

SEVERAL TYPES OF SYNTHETIC INSULATORS ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU. TECHNOLOGIES AND FIBERS DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER. BELOW ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES USED IN ORAGE GARMENTS.

Orage Warm SI is one of the highest performing, minimal weight synthetic insulations on the market. Providing best-in-class comfort and breathability, this versatile insulation is designed to handle cold, wet conditions and offering maximum protection from mid-town, all the way to the mountains.

Natural down and other synthetic insulators each have their advantages and disadvantages. Whether you choose one or the other will depend on the climate, the activity you plan to do and (obviously) your budget. Now that you know all the facts, we hope you enjoy your outdoor adventures a little more!
